6 Type Rules For Enhanced Text Design Experience

Typography is definitely one of the major aspects of any designing project. Having an attractive typeface for describing information is very crucial as it leaves the user with an effective impression of your website. Although there is no specific formula for type designs, but there are certain rules that have been regarded as the most effective Type Rules.

 Type Rules

1. Readability:- Readability means arranging words and groups of words in such a way that it allows the readers eye to access the content easily and in a way that makes some sense. It is actually a kind of art that gets polished over time as successful combinations are found. There are a number of typefaces that are difficult to read . One should refrain themselves from using such typefaces in the script, like novelty or blackletter families. The typefaces that are often more readable possesses the property to be scanned and don’t draw a lot of attention to themselves.

2. Manage Space Between Lines and Type:- This is essential for mobile reading, where most of the exaggerated line spacing can contribute to ease of reading. The amount of space between lines depends on a number of factors. General design schemes follow these rules:

  • Most of the websites set spacing to 125% of the text size
  • In case of mobile device, the spacing is around 150%
  • It is good to use a loose paragraph spacing i.e. equal to a “return” to make paragraphs easily scannable

3. Increase The Height Of X:- The x-height defines how tall a lowercase “x” is.. Typefaces having tall x-heights are generally easier to read and lowercase letters are closer in height to uppercase letters.

4. The Importance of Stroke Width:- Letters with super-thin strokes can be difficult to read due to their lower contrast. Overly thick stroke widths can present a similar problem because they are not clearly visible. In the same way, letters with a dramatic contrast between thick and thin strokes have readability issues too. The best way to deal is to stick to letter forms having relatively uniform stroke widths.

5. Limit Typeface Usage:- First of all, pick up the two typeface families and an optional one for the art elements if required and stick to them. Map out the ways for typefaces that are to be used. Some of these steps involve determining color, size and placement of typefaces in the design. They must be consistent from page to page and look unified over multiple device types.

6. Improve Contrast:- One of the typeface practices that is followed by too many designers is having the minimal contrast between the background and the letters.  This is a poor practice as the content must be displayed in the best possible contrast.  Increase the contrast value between the background and the type so that users can clearly read every word on the screen with ease. One of the popular color tools to help you create a color combination and manage appropriate contrast ratio is Color Safe.

Apart from achieving excellent UX design, a website design has a lot more scope through improvements in the typography.
