Crucial Components of an Android App UI Design

Saurabh Tiwary | 8th December 2016

When we talk about the User Interface of a mobile platform, it’s unfair to separate the design principles based on their objectives. It is worth noting that usability is the prime goal in designing any type of UI for mobiles. Be it an Android App UI Design or iOS, UI designers put ass load efforts to  make sure they alway keep the User Experience at the front.

While providing the best UX is the main target, relying on the design principles for every individual platform is equally important. Here, I will discuss some of the major keynotes while you are designing the user interface for modern Android apps.

Crucial Components of an Android App UI Design

The App Icon UI Design

The first thing to start with the UI design is, to begin with, the app icon that the user will see and where the brand will be focused. For Android apps, the Material Design guidelines need to be followed.

Android                    iOS

It suggests a wide range of colors be used and the implementation of paper shadows. These are some of the standards set by the Google for designing app UI in Android. However, they are not often followed strictly. Android icons are supposed to have a transparent background, so it  can work with different shapes that fit the icon space.

App Bar Design for Android App

In terms of App Bar, there is not much of difference when we talk about any specific mobile platform. App bars must have a consistent style across the app and adhere to the platform sizes to provide a native look and feel to the design. You can refer to this link for more definitions.

The Grid Structure

Although it Is not usual to employ column grid-like in the case of the web, paddings, sizes and spaces must be consistent across every platform. Material Design sets standard grid i.e. 8dp grid for general purposes and a 4dp of spacing for icons and types alignment.

The Navigation Options

Android App UI Design can use tabs or the drawer menu. The bottom navigation bar on Android is not commonly used, but it is a part of the Material guidelines and incorporated by apps such as Instagram. It’s completely your choice to test and employ if you think users might appreciate.

Android apps can consist of the navigation bar, a set of three physical or virtual buttons depending on the device.

Assets and Screen Densities

There are a number manufacturers of Android devices resulting in a lot of different screen sizes and variable densities. In general, Android will require 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 4x as you can see in the table below.
