   Iconography- A Distinct Design Asset

Earlier, designing was limited to the hand-crafted effort of the artists. But so far, Graphic design has evolved too much in the past few decades. And since then, various ideas and technologies were put on the table. And progressively, a lot of things changed in the field of  graphic design as a result of varying need of the user and their high demands. A part of such change includes bringing iconography into  the play.

Iconography has nothing to do with the design functionality, instead it retains much of importance to design usability.

What Is Iconography?

As per the modern web design applications, Iconography can be defined as an art of creating visual images and symbols used to specify some object or action without using text. As the word signifies, Iconography pertains to the icons and so it is used in the case of web or mobile apps design.

Importance:-

Although a design should be universal, it is not bound to be inflected with similar design patterns or text. So, in order to attain the interactive design, designers make use of tiny icons to bring out a classic appearance for a website or mobile UI.

  • To Draw Attention Of The User – Icons have  greater impact as compared to the visible text. An icon itself speaks how will it act when brought into action.
  • To Highlight A Specific Content- A page might have been overloaded with too much of text and one might want reader to focus on a particular word of text or sentence. So it is a great idea to iconize the text so it stands apart in the crowd and becomes easier for the viewer to perceive.
  • To Represent Data Graphically– Any diagram or picture requiring data analysis can make use of icon design to present report without using heavy texts.
  • Call To Action Design- Icons have applications in designing CTA buttons on websites to specify any action. For example, a “Call Now” button can have an icon of “Dialing Phone” without including text. However, the icon must be boldly designed so that its action is well declared.

Iconography extends the functionalities described above and can widely be used to convey a particular meaning to the audience without making use of heavy weighted texts. In modern design, iconography has seen numerous applications in mobile apps UI design, menu design etc. Overall, it has turned out to be a handy art in achieving distinct web or UI design.
