Design PrinciplesWeb and graphic designing has reached a new level through the success of Material Design. A large number of design projects so far have already switched to the material design applications and the causes seems quite obvious as they are widely used in website and mobile UI design services. The better part of these design schemes is their flexible nature and boundless scope. However, in order to get most out of the designing projects, it’s essential to go through the design principles of material design.

Material Design Principles

1) Make Use Of Main Resources

While commencing with material design, the best way is to go through the resources provided by Google.

It often gets updated and explains every detail that go into practicing material designs.

The best part is that apart from covering Android-specific aspects of material design, it also discusses from every aspect as in relation to any app or the web design project.

2) Understand The “Material”

The key idea behind the material design principles is to resemble it to the real world, but only to some level of abstraction.

However, you must not make your design look overly realistic. The only objective is to convey the idea of material to the users.

For an example, we are aware of how metal feels, it is easy for us to make out what actually a wooden desk looks like. The idea is to make it feel materialistic using the minimum design elements such as shadows, shades, etc.

3) Make Use Of Shadows

Use of surface, edges, shadows and lighting is what material design focuses on, which can be often employed in mobile UI/UX designing.  For an example, shadows convey the hierarchy of different elements that combine into a complete design.

What actually matters here is the overall structure of the design and if the structure of a shadow as a whole makes a positive sense to the human eye, it is probably a material design.

4) Employ Bold Colors

Material design has wide applications in mobile app UI design and it often makes use of bold colors to have a distinct impact of material being used in the design. Bold colors play a very important role in such designs as material design follows minimalist design approach and colors have a huge impact.

5) Make Use Of White Spaces

Use of white space makes your design look minimalistic and in material design, the idea is to use white space as well the negative space. Also, typography plays a crucial role like it’s being used in the flat design. You can make use of large scale typography to seek attention of the users.

6) Use Edge To Edge Images

Material design loves images. It means that if you include any images in a mobile app UI design, you must focus it in the graphical content.

Such images need to be featured edge-to-edge i.e. there should not be  margins between the edges of the various images.

When carried out properly, it creates an outstanding experience for the user and the designers love it the most.
